The hop bushes have interesting pods, colourful when they first come out but they have all dried off now but still looking appealing.
This one is the broad leafed Hop Bush.
Indigenous uses of the plant were to treat toothache, cuts and stingray stings.

The Melaleucas (Black Tea Tree) along the edge of the water hole have been covered in flower lately, the bees and other insects have been loving it!

In times past the leaves were put on a fire & then inhaled to treat colds; later when people had utensils the leaves were boiled & inhaled.

The Native Bauhinia while not as stunning a flower as the Northern variety is still a beautiful shaped shade tree. You will see quite a few of these in the Botanic Gardens, in particular just before you reach the Ooline trees.

The Waddi Tree is a nice protective place for this Double Barred Finch to hide in. If you've ever felt the Waddi tree leaves on your walk past you will know they are rather needle like.

The next 'Friends of the Gardens' working bee has been brought forward to next Wednesday 12 November, starting at 7.30am. If you can spare an hour or two we'd love to see you there and remember there will be morning tea at 9.30am.

The main tasks this month will be whipper-snipping around the base of trees, garden edges, and along the lake’s edge. If some would prefer to walk around removing cactus and weeds, that would also be greatly appreciated.

As you walk along the Brennans Rd walkway next to the Botanic Gardens this weekend, look over the fence and check out the Northern Bauhinia as it's starting to bloom. There are others in the garden as well but this one is the biggest and looks quite spectacular when in full bloom.

You may have been wondering what has been going on in the jungle over on the north east corner of the gardens opposite the palm grove.

The Bigimbul Rangers have been very busy clearing the weedy Cooba trees out and are making a 'Yarning Circle'.

When finished this will be a wonderful spot to have a 'yarn' or just sit and contemplate or listen to nature around you, so watch this space for up dates on the progress.

Recent rains have made the weeds grow so jobs will include weeding and whipper snipping. Not too much mowing to do this time.

Some of the graduates of the Level II Horticultural Course at the GTT (conducted under an Indigenous Skills and Workforce State Development Grant ), have been helping out at the gardens lately and will be joining us on Wednesday also, so come along and say Hello.

The morning will finish with morning tea at 10am and the GRC Councillors have been invited to join us for this as well.
