Weakly tufted perennial.
Stems - erect or drooping, to 1.2 m high.
Leaves - hairless or hairy; blades flat or inrolled, rough on the upper surface, 10–30 cm long and 1–4 mm wide; sheath smooth or rough; ligule minute, scarious; auricles well-developed, narrow, encircling the stem and often overlapping.
Flowerhead - spike of 1–10 spikelets. Spikelets 6–12-flowered, 18–35 mm long; glumes unequal, ovate to acuminate, 1.5–12 mm long.
Flowering July–December.
Habitat
A common grass especially in drier or rocky areas. Found in shaded and open areas of both native and older improved pastures. Concentrations may occur in areas of prior disturbance.
